The Gruden Trade

The Raiders Research Project presents:

The Gruden Trade and other deals

2002-present (updated April 27, 2011)

The details of the Raiders’ most infamous deal:

During the 2001-02 offseason, the Oakland Raiders allowed head coach Jon Gruden to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for 1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2002, a 1st round pick in 2003 and a 2nd round pick in 2004, plus cash. The trade continues to have an effective on the Raiders in 2011-12, albeit under the law of diminishing returns.

This is a breakdown of what happened to those picks, with Raider draft choices in bold.

The picks eventually were:

1st round/21st overall, 2002

2nd round/53rd overall, 2002

1st round/32nd overall, 2003

2nd round/33rd overall, 2004

On Draft Day 2002, the Raiders made a series of trades involving the 21st overall pick.

They traded the 21st overall pick and their 3rd round/89th overall pick to the Washington Redskins for the 18th overall pick, then traded the 18th overall pick and their 5th round/158th overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons for the 17th overall pick.

Washington later traded the 21st overall pick to New England for the 32nd overall pick, a 3rd round/96th overall pick and a 7th round/234th overall pick.

With the 17th overall pick, the Raiders chose CB/KR Phillip Buchanon of the University of Miami. (Buchanon played for the Raiders from 2002-2004, and was traded to the Houston Texans just before the 2005 NFL Draft; see below.)

With the 53rd overall pick, the Raiders chose OT Langston Walker of California. (Walker played for the Raiders from 2002-2006, and signed with the Buffalo Bills as an unrestricted free agent during the 2006-07 offseason. He rejoined the Raiders in 2009 after being released by the Bills, playing in 2009-10 before becoming a free agent.)

Atlanta chose RB T.J. Duckett of Michigan State 18th overall and QB Kurt Kittner of Illinois 89th overall. New England chose TE Daniel Graham of Colorado 21st overall. And Washington chose QB Patrick Ramsey of Tulane 32nd overall and DE Greg Scott of Hampton 234th overall. The Redskins traded the 96th overall pick to the Baltimore Ravens, which traded it to the Denver Broncos. Denver chose DT Dorsett Davis of Mississippi State.

On Draft Day 2003, the Raiders chose DE Tyler Brayton of Colorado with the 32nd overall pick, and traded the 2nd round pick in 2004 to Houston for a 3rd round/83rd overall pick and 7th round/262nd overall pick. (Brayton played for the Raiders from 2003-2007, and signed with the Carolina Panthers as an unrestricted free agent during the 2007-08 offseason.)

With the 83rd overall pick, the Raiders chose LB Sam Williams of Fresno State, and with the 262nd overall pick, they chose WR Ryan Hoag of Gustavus Adolphus. (Williams played for the Raiders from 2003-10, and was released at the end of training camp in 2011; Hoag was waived in training camp in 2003.)

Houston exercised the 2004 2nd round pick in the 2003 supplemental draft, choosing RB Tony Hollings of Georgia Tech.

Prior to Draft Day 2005, the Raiders traded Buchanon to Houston for 2nd and 3rd round picks. With the 3rd round/78th overall pick, the Raiders selected LB Kirk Morrison of San Diego State. (Morrison played for the Raiders from 2005-2009, and was traded to Jacksonville during Draft Weekend 2010; see below.)

The Raiders then traded the 2nd round/47th overall pick to the New York Jets as part of deal that included veteran TE Doug Jolley and two 6th round picks for the 1st round/26th overall pick. The Jets selected K Mike Nugent of Ohio State with the 47th pick and RB Cedric Houston of Tennessee with the 6th round/182nd overall pick; the 6th round/185th overall pick was traded to Jacksonville, which chose KR Chad Owens of Hawaii.

The Raiders then traded the 26th overall pick to Seattle with the 4th round/105th overall pick for the 1st round/23rd overall pick, and chose CB Fabian Washington of Nebraska. (Washington played for the Raiders from 2005-2007, and was traded to Baltimore on Draft Day 2008; see below.) Seattle chose C Chris Spencer of Mississippi and OT Ray Willis of Florida State.

On Draft Day 2008, the Raiders traded Washington to Baltimore for a 4th round/125th overall pick. They then chose WR Arman Shields with the pick. (Shields spent the 2008 season in Injured Reserve and was waived/failed physical in training camp in 2009.)

During Draft Weekend 2010, the Raiders traded Morrison with a 5th/153rd overall pick to Jacksonville for a 4th round/108th overall pick. They then chose WR/KR Jacoby Ford with the pick. Jacksonville chose DE Austen Lane of Murray State.

Summary:

In the end, by January 2012, the Raiders have one remaining asset to show as compensation for Gruden:

A portion of WR/KR Jacoby Ford, chosen in 2010 with a pick (4th/108th) acquired by trade for a package that included a player (Morrison) chosen with a pick acquired as part of a package for a player (Buchanon) chosen with a pick directly acquired in the Gruden Trade.
