Raiders in Europe
The Raiders Research Project presents:
The Raiders’ European league allocations, 1991-2007
Over the 15-season history of the World League of American Football, later called NFL Europe and NFL Europa, the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders’ assignment history was spotty at best. These are the players allocated by the Raiders to the European spring developmental league since its birth in 1991. Players are listed along with any past history with the Raiders, and with their subsequent Raider fate in the fall after their assignment, where appropriate (Raiders history in italics; players who made the Raiders’ roster that fall are also in bold). You can see the vast majority of players, even those with prior Raiders experience, failed to turn their spring gains into fall roster spots with the team.
The WLAF existed for two seasons, 1991 and 1992, before taking two years off, then returned in spring 1995. The league, renamed NFL Europe, existed until 2007 when, shortly after its first and only ”NFL Europa” season, the National Football League announced the NFLE’s dissolution in favor of playing NFL games in Europe.
In its later years, NFL Europa players have been granted roster exemptions until the final cutdown; this accounts for most of the released players lasting until that final stage of camp. For 2006 and 2007, the exemptions lasted only until the preliminary, late-camp 75-player cutdown.
