Chaz Schilens

The Oakland Raiders announced tonight that they have signed seventh-round draft pick Chaz Schilens, a wide receiver out of San Diego State.

Schilens is the third of the team’s five picks to sign, following first-round running back Darren McFadden of Arkansas and fourth-round defensive back Tyvon Branch of Connecticut.

Fourth-round wide receiver Arman Shields of Richmond and sixth-round defensive end Trevor Scott of Buffalo remain unsigned.

According to Raiders.com, Schilens said:

“I’m happy it’s over. I was waiting to get this done and I’m glad it’s over. Now we can get down to business. It was always a dream of mine to play in the NFL. We’ve got a good group of talented guys and there is a lot of competition. It’s been fun so far and I can only expect good things for the future.”

No word on who was released to make room on the 80-man roster for Schilens. Earlier, Ourlads Scouting Services reported fullback/tight end Tony Jackson was released to make room for Branch, who signed earlier this week.

No terms were disclosed for either Branch or Schilens.

Update: The Raiders waived offensive lineman Jonathan Palmer, signed off the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad late last season, to make room for Schilens. Ourlads again with the report.

The Raiders exchanged a couple of first-year players who are likely just camp bodies, waiving sixth-string quarterback Brian White, a rookie free agent out of Portland State, and signing fullback/tight end Tony Jackson.

Jackson, who played his college ball at Iowa, was on the Raiders’ practice squad for a few weeks during Art Shell’s second tenure in 2006.

White was buried on the depth chart behind veterans JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo, and fellow “camp arm” types Jeff Otis and Erik Meyer.

Jackson, who is 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds, will compete with Justin Griffith and Oren O’Neal at fullback, and – if he’s not considered too short for the position – Zack Miller, John Madsen, Tony Stewart and Fred Wakefield, plus rookies Darrell Strong and Chris Wagner at tight end.

He was originally the Seattle Seahawks’ sixth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
