Ten Reasons the Raiders will/won’t make playoffs

November 14th, 2010 No comments

Darren_McFadden_24

This bye week feels completely different for fans of the Oakland Raiders (5-4). Instead of talk of who to purge or what players in the collegiate ranks could be donning Silver & Black, there’s talk of what it will take to make the post-season and how they can get there. Here are ten reasons to why the Raiders will or will not see playoff games this season:

1 — Oakland won’t make the playoffs because their schedule is brutal.

They only face two teams with sub .500 records, but one of them is the Chargers (4-5) on the road. The same San Diego team that tallied 506-total yards of offense in their week-five match-up at Oakland. Visiting Pittsburgh (6-2) after the bye and back-to-back games home versus Indianapolis (5-3) and on the road at Kansas City (5-3) could be back-breakers. The perfect scenario would be a winner takes all final game against the Chiefs – victor gets divisional title and probably the lone playoff spot an AFC West team will get. At Jacksonville (4-4) is no cakewalk and a home match-up against a Miami (4-4) who is better on the road will keep the Silver & Black on their toes.

2 – Oakland will make the playoffs because they are peaking when it matters most.

The Raiders went into the bye week winning three straight games for the first time since 2002. More importantly, they did it with key players injured and young players in vital spots. With seven games left, the team feels like they are generating momentum and gaining the confidence needed to carry them through a tough second half of the campaign.

3 – Oakland will make the playoffs because the division is weak.

Kansas City is atop the west, but you can make the case that they’ve taken advantage of their opponents’ difficulties early on their schedule. Starting today, they face the Broncos on the road, at Seattle (4-4) week-12 and back-to-back games at San Diego and St. Louis (4-4) before finishing against the Titans (5-3) and Oakland. The Chargers have a talent-laden club and could make a run, but they have to face the Colts, Raiders and Chiefs during a three-week span. They have the most favorable end to the schedule with the Bengals (2-6) and Broncos in weeks 16 and 17. The west is ripe for the taking, and if there ever was a year anyone can win it, it’s this season.

4 – Oakland will not make the playoffs because of instability at QB.

Is it Bruce Gradkowski, or Jason Campbell? Reports state that the owner wants to stay on course with Campbell, who has been under center during the three-game streak and was likened to Jim Plunkett before the start of the season. Prior to that, Tom Cable boasted that the team knew Gradkowski was their man. Regardless of who’s passing, the Raiders need them to play steady football. More importantly, the team has to be behind him completely and perform at a high level for them.

5 – Oakland will make the playoffs because their key players are playing at a Pro-Bowl level.

Darren McFadden (757-yards rushing), Zach Miller (34 rec. 461-yards 4 TD), Richard Seymour (5-sacks) and Nnamdi Asomugha are legitimate Pro-Bowl candidates. All four will prove to be important cogs on their respective units and are primed for solid second halves. Punter Shane Lechler is a lock to be an All-Pro again this season and Sebastian Janikowski, after blowing an important kick versus the Cardinals in week-three, has righted himself to lead the NFL in points (89), touchbacks (24) and field goals made (22).

6 – Oakland will make the playoffs because of their youth movement.

The Raiders have a youthful backfield with McFadden and Michael Bush. Jacoby Ford has ignited the team on special teams and is coming off an epic performance versus the Chiefs. Jared Veldheer is locking down the left tackle spot. Tyvon Branch and Mike Mitchell are developing nicely in the secondary. Rookies Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston are expected to get better, and fullback Marcel Reece has been an underrated performer all year. The Raiders have loads of talent that are on the rise.

Rolando McClain will play a major role as the season winds down

Rolando McClain will play a major role as the season winds down

7 – Oakland will make the playoffs because they are getting key players back from injury.

Chaz Schilens has not played a down in 2010 and Louis Murphy has missed the last two contests. That could only boost an anemic wide receiver corps, along with the return of Miller, who was inactive against the Chiefs. The Raiders run defense could get a big lift with veteran John Henderson’s return. Asomugha’s recovery will be imperative as well as the continued health of McFadden.

8 – Oakland will make the playoffs because they are learning how to win.

Cable’s bunch bounced back after a pitiful performance on the road opening day. A tough defeat at Arizona and consecutive loss to Houston was followed up by a gritty effort against the Chargers. And when they loss to San Francisco, Oakland torched Denver on the road, disposed of Seattle at home and triumphed against Kansas City in one of the best performances in front of the ‘Black Hole’ since 2002. They’ve blown out opponents and sneaked out tight victories.

9 – Oakland will not make the playoffs because of Tom Cable.

Yes, Cable has to be admired after taking over for Lane Kiffin, spending tumultuous years with JaMarcus Russell and altering the losing culture that festered in Alameda. But it is a legitimate question to ask whether or not he can ultimately lead this team into the post-season. Players have belief in him. But this is the first time this group has found success and dealing with it, trying to achieve more and taking it to the next level will be something that could either land Cable a three-year to stick around, or he’ll be allowed to move on when his contract ends.

10 – Oakland will not make the playoffs because of a tough AFC.

The conference is the class of the NFL. They are many legitimate Super Bowl contenders (Jets, Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Colts) and in a year where wild-card spots will be at a premium, Oakland may not be ready to take that next step against clubs that are seasoned and playoff tested, and that know what it takes to advance into the post-season.

FAN REACTION

Here’s what some Raiders fans think will happen, and their thoughts so far about the season from Twitter:

Best player: DMac. Best coach: Hue. Best rookie: Veldheer. Craziest Raider: Gallery and that hair!!! Go Raiders!!! – enasty7

[prediction for end of season] 9-7/DMac and line [offensive – best players]/Seymour and line on D/best moment: win over Chefs/love the blitzing and left side running. – mattcrichards

definitely has to be Jacoby’s snatch/catch away from Flowers to set up game tying field goal [best moment]. Reece’s quick slant vs Seahawks 2nd. – lopezee

11-5 [predicted finish] dmc cable huffs sack fumble return by branch to end losing streak to sd cuz it was my 1st raiders home [game], I’m from Louisiana. – Rdrs_Ahole

Week – 17 Sun. Jan. 02 at Chiefs 1:00 PM

*All times ET

There are a few things I look at once the schedule is announced. When are the back-to-back road games and against whom? How does the December schedule look like? How many home stretches and against what opponents? The placement of playoff teams from the prior season on the schedule. The location of the bye week and if there are any stretches versus divisional foes.

AFC WEST STRETCHES:

The Raiders don’t play a divisional rival until week-five against the San Diego Chargers. And they don’t play any back-to-back games against AFC West opponents.

VERDICT: The heated divisional foes have been spread out throughout the schedule and placed scattered throughout the campaign – a very good thing for this Raider team.

TOUGH SECTIONS:

Oakland has two-sets of back-to-back road games. They travel to nearby San Francisco to face the 49ers during week-six, and then turn around and face the Denver Broncos in week-seven. That’s not a killer road trip in terms of miles or opponent if you are projecting right now. Their next road trip starts week-thirteen against the Chargers and ends the following weekend at Jacksonville against the Jaguars. Again, an easy start traveling to nearby San Diego and ending on December 12th against what is not expected to be a prominent club in 2010.

VERDICT: These are not killer road trips for the Raiders, especially when they start very close to home. Plus, the teams on their back-to-back travels are not considered juggernauts of the NFL. Another positive sign and good outlook for this Raider schedule.

DECEMBER GAMES:

When a team from California travels late in the season, the first thing you want to look out for is a potential bad climate spots. Oakland goes back to Pittsburgh in November, but that was the site of probably their best win in 2009. Oakland kicks-off December with two games in warm climate zones, end the month at home in back-to-back games and end the season in January at Kansas City, where they have won three-consecutive times.

VERDICT: Oakland caught a lot of good breaks. Their final month does not look treacherous with their lone bad-weather visit may be when they head into Arrowhead – a place they have fared very well in lately.

HOME STREAKS:

October 3rd and 10th, the Silver & Black face the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers. Then in weeks eight and nine, they face the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. As the season ends, they go against Denver in week-15 and Indianapolis week-16.

VERDICT: Schedule makers must like the Raiders, because there are no perilous stretches here as it stands, and the home streaks look very manageable.

BYE WEEK:

A week-10 bye is as good as it gets. Placed really comfortably near the midpoint of the season.

PLACEMENT OF PLAYOFF TEAMS FROM ‘09:

Arizona week three is the first of this grouping, but this is a team without Kurt Warner and in flux with major changes after losing many key defensive players. The next club is San Diego during week-five, followed by the Chargers again in week-13. They face the Colts week-16, but by that time many years, Peyton Manning and co. have all wrapped up and are coasting into the playoffs.

VERDICT: No one should be yelling about conspiracy theories here – this schedule couldn’t have been laid out better for the Silver & Black.

Oakland Raiders 2009 regular season schedule announced

April 14th, 2009 No comments

The Oakland Raiders 2009 regular season schedule was released on Tuesday night. Their 16-game campaign will feature a nationally televised home opener on Monday night versus the San Diego Chargers and a Thanksgiving day match-up on the road against the Dallas Cowboys.

Here is the schedule in its entirety:

Monday, September 14 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS 7:15 p.m. ESPN

Sunday, September 20 at Kansas City Chiefs 10:00 a.m. CBS

Sunday, September 27 DENVER BRONCOS 1:15 p.m. CBS

Sunday, October 4 at Houston Texans 10:00 a.m. CBS

Sunday, October 11 at New York Giants 10:00 a.m. CBS

Sunday, October 18 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 1:05 p.m. FOX

Sunday, October 25 NEW YORK JETS 1:05 p.m. CBS

Sunday, November 1 at San Diego Chargers 1:05 p.m. CBS

Sunday, November 8 BYE

Sunday, November 15 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 1:05 p.m. CBS

Sunday, November 22 CINCINNATI BENGALS 1:15 p.m. CBS

Thursday, November 26 at Dallas Cowboys 1:15 p.m. CBS

Sunday, December 6 at Pittsburgh Steelers 10:00 a.m. CBS

Sunday, December 13 WASHINGTON REDSKINS 1:05 p.m. FOX

Sunday, December 20 at Denver Broncos 1:05 p.m. CBS

Sunday, December 27 at Cleveland Browns 10:00 a.m. CBS

Sunday, January 3, 2010 BALTIMORE RAVENS 1:05 p.m. CBS

There are a few things I look for once the schedule is announced. When are the back-to-back road games and against whom? How does the December schedule look like? How many home stretches and against what opponents? The placement of playoff teams from the prior season on the schedule. The location of the bye week and if there are any stretches versus divisional foes.

Oakland gets a break in their first set of back-to-back road games against the Texans and Giants. Houston is not known to be an overly difficult road test, and playing at the Meadowlands in early October may not be as treacherous as the later months of the season when the winds kick in and the weather plays tricks on visiting clubs. The back-to-back stretch at Dallas and at Pittsburgh is very difficult. Playing on the road versus the Cowboys on Thanksgiving is tough, but then following that up with a game against the defending Super Bowl champions may be tougher.

As for December road games; at Pitt., at Den., and at Cle., can be an issue especially if mother nature decides to inject some elements into these contests.

Oakland has to establish a presence at home during their home stretches. Back-to-back home games in late October versus the Eagles and Jets could be key. These are teams flying from the east coast, that are difficult to project at this point in terms what they will look like, but can provide a good litmus test when teams start establishing themselves around the league.

The consecutive home games in mid-November prior to their back-to-back versus Pitt. and Dall. is vital. Oakland has to have a good showing against the Chiefs and Bengals before facing one of the toughest 2 weeks this team has had in recent years.

The BYE week is placed very nicely mid-way through the season.

But more importantly, the start of the season is what makes this schedule for the Raiders very interesting.

You have to love the fact that they start off with three straight vs. SD, KC and DEN. Oakland can establish where they are right off the bat. No excuses! Tom Cable can set the table early and see where the team is. If they are good enough to hang with the big boys, and win key games within the division early, it can have a nice domino effect to the season. And since the perception is that the AFC West is very weak right now, which is a vary valid point as evidenced by what has occurred over the last year, then the Raiders have a chance to really make a splash early, or continue their awful showings against west rivals since 2003.

Oakland Raiders to play on Monday Night to open season, & Thanksgiving at Dallas

March 23rd, 2009 No comments

368bh_DSC_0151For the fourth time in five seasons, the Oakland Raiders will open the regular season in prime time.

The Silver & Black will host the three-time defending AFC West champions San Diego Chargers on Monday September 14th, on ESPN, as part of their traditional double header to kickoff Monday Night Football’s schedule. All four teams playing on that night began play in 1960, as the NFL will commemorate the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League.

Oakland, which has a 36-24-1 record on Monday Night Football, lead the all-time series versus the Chargers 54-42-2. In 2005, the Silver & Black opened the NFL season on a Thursday night versus the New England Patriots, in 2006 they hosted the Chargers on Monday night and in 2008, they faced the Denver Broncos in another prime time contest to kickoff the season.

The Raiders will also play on Thanksgiving at Dallas. That marks the first time since 1970 that the Silver & Black play on the traditional American holiday.

The announcement of the Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving games was made Monday by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at the NFL Annual Meeting in Dana Point, Calif.

The rest of the 2009 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced in April.

NOTES

  • The Raiders have lost 10-straight nationally televised games by a combined score of 279-122.
  • Oakland has lost six straight Monday night games by a margin of 173-31.
  • Oakland’s other road games are at Denver, Kansas City, San Diego, the New York Giants, Pittsburgh, Houston and Cleveland. They will host: the New York Jets, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Denver and Kansas City.
