A source told FOXSports.com that running backs coach Kelly Skipper will be retained and Greg Manusky was interviewed for the defensive coordinator position.

The San Diego Chargers fired Manusky at the end of the 2011 season after being their coordinator and he was San Francisco’s defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2010.

The Oakland Raiders were denied permission to talk to linebackers coach Richard Smith (Broncos) for their defensive coordinator spot.

Skipper has been with the Silver & Black since 2007, serving as a tight ends coach and a running backs coach since 2009. His return could be important in keeping Michael Bush (UFA) and continuing the growth of their running back unit. Bush and Darren McFadden have both enjoyed success early in their careers under Skipper.

“I’d like to thank Greg for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team and coaching staff this past season,” Chargers head coach Norv Turner said in a statement released by the team after Manusky’s firing.

Prior to being retained for another season, Turner and general manager A.J Smith appeared to be content with Manusky. But he was the one to take the fall for the team’s failure.

Turner continued; “Defensively, it’s all about having impact players. If you don’t have players that can be a guy one-on-one and make a big play, you’re not going to get the number of stops you need to get. It’s been a hard year for all of us and a tough year for Greg, but I thought he did a good job.”

Yesterday’s 38-26 defeat at the hands of the San Diego Chargers will sting for a bit.

“To find out it worked out the way you needed it to and to lose this one,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “It’s going to be a long offseason.”

The Oakland Raiders had everything go right at another site to pave the way to a division crown. Kansas City handled their business and gave the Silver & Black a shot. The Raiders couldn’t close with a win and now they will be headed home for the winter.

“If you can’t stop a team with everything on the line, you don’t deserve to be a playoff team,” defensive tackle Richard Seymour said. “We didn’t get it done. So this one hurts. It stings for sure. It’s disappointing. It’s frustrating.”

Oakland ended the year 29th in the league in yards allowed per game (387.6), 29th in points allowed per game (27.1) and allowed a franchise-worst 31 TD passes this season.

Someone has to take the blame for that, especially since in key games, when they needed stops at any point late in contest, they failed; namely at Buffalo, in Oakland versus the Broncos and the collapse against the Lions.

“I think Chuck [Bresnahan] knows how I feel,” Hue Jackson said. “I’m disappointed over there. I have been. Chuck knows what I feel, and it’s not good enough.”

Bresnahan has far too much talent on that defense… and we all know the players aren’t going anywhere.

Jackson should feel the heat more for this collapse as well. For months, he danced around the Darren McFadden injury issue; he boasted about building a bully and proclaimed that the penalty issues would get fixed — all contributing factors to their playoff-less season.

The head coach commented: “To say I’m [mad] is an understatement. Obviously we got beat here at home, and it didn’t look like a football team that was hungry enough to go win the AFC West title. … “We didn’t play well. I’m not going to sugarcoat it.”

Oakland didn’t play well in their grandest stage. For the first time since going back to the Bay Area, the Raiders hosted eight-games that were completely sold-out. They managed to disappoint their fans in the franchises biggest game since their conference championship win versus the Titans.

A listless performance – one that reflects bad on the coach.

“Maybe they thought that team was going to lay down. I told ‘em all week, I knew they weren’t. I told you guys. I told the media. I told them. That’s all I preached,” said Jackson.

Philip Rivers and the Chargers enjoyed ending Oakland's bid for a playoff berth.

His preaching’s were not good enough in 2011. He talked the talk, but could not walk the walk.

Jackson talked about the Raiders needing an attitude adjustment next season. This may be true, but the coach also may need to take a new tact when handling the team from week-to-week. He was a rookie coach; so we saw many questionable Xs and Os, time management issues and other flaws that can be learned from. He can also use now his free time to be introspective and realize what he can do better to elevate the play of his roster.

“What I mean by that, the killer instinct has got to exist here. It’s something I’ve talked about. You try to change it, change it, change it. You do a lot of different things, and I haven’t been able to get it changed,” Jackson said.

Changing that attitude in one-season is tough, but that was done in 2010 with Tom Cable – in 2011, they had to step forward.

It can be done and in the NFL, it has been proven that quick-turnarounds are possible. Which makes this season a disappointing one.

It’s an unstable league from year-to-year, and with the Raiders at 7-4 in late November; this is why Jackson has to look at this as a missed opportunity.

“I didn’t see it coming. It’s sickening. We’ve got seven months to think about it. We ain’t good enough yet,” stated Tommy Kelly.

He’s right. They are not good enough yet. But that doesn’t automatically mean that they’ll be next campaign.

MORE REACTION

Carson Palmer: “Anytime you lose at the end of the season and your season is over and you don’t win the Super Bowl it’s difficult. It’s frustrating when you hear the other outcomes of other games and know what was there to be had — [it] just makes it that much worse, that much more difficult.”

Richard Seymour: “It feels like a bad dream, for sure. But it’s reality. The reality of it is, we couldn’t stop ‘em when we needed to. I don’t think we stopped ‘em all day.”

Tommy Kelly on whether he’ll watch the post-season: “I’m watching [the] History Channel and Fox Sports Soccer.”

Vincent Jackson on ending the season for Oakland: “It wasn’t our goal to end their season, but it is kind of nice because we’re going home as well.”

Cotto: What’s the feel of the team knowing that a win and some help will get you into the playoffs?

Quentin Groves: We feel strong. We feel together as a team. We feel as though our backs are against the wall so we need to fight our way out.

Cotto: Looking back at the year, everything that has happened dating back to the summer, can you describe the road to this season finale?

Groves: Roller coaster – but we have had to deal with a lot of ups and downs, but through it all we have stayed together [as a] team. Hence we still have a chance to be in the playoffs.

Cotto: What do you expect out of the home crowd this Sunday?

Groves: I expect the “Black Hole” and the home fans to be electric!

Cotto: Eric Weddle and other Chargers have talked about keeping Oakland out of the playoffs… Is that just more fuel for the team?

Groves: We play football! That’s what we are going to do on Sunday — PLAY football!

Groves is in his second season with the Raiders. A key contributor on special teams, the linebacker also played a vital role early in the season as a starter before the arrival of Aaron Curry. His work ethic and professionalism has helped the team’s depth on defense and secure their ability to cover punts and kickoffs.

He was quoted earlier in the week,” This time of year you’re usually shipping your car home, making travel plans.”

Groves continued: “But now it’s all about getting that W.”

A win and some help and Oakland will be playoff bound.

SBReport.net would like to wish Quentin Groves and the rest of the Raider Nation a Happy New Year.

You can follow Groves on Twitter here.

In seven career games versus the San Diego Chargers, Michael Bush has amassed 490-yards rushing (4.3) and four touchdowns, including his record breaking 242-yards from scrimmage performance earlier in this season.

Norv Turner and San Diego’s defense is well aware of the rusher’s prowess and his importance to Oakland’s offense.

“[Bush] is a big, physical guy. He’s a downhill runner,” Turner said. “What’s happened with us the last two times we’ve played them, they’ve gotten ahead in the game and he’s gotten an awful lot of carries. Two of his biggest plays the last time we played him came on screens.”

Hue Jackson is known to pull rabbits out of his hat, but Eric Weddle simplified Oakland’s attack and hit on an important aspect for them.

“They’re going to run the football. They’re going to take shots up the field. It’s pretty simple,” Weddle stated. “They’ll be successful if they win on first down and get into second or third-and-manageable.

“Carson’s an elite quarterback. He has his ups and downs, but he can make all the throws. When he’s protected he can sling it around. We didn’t play particularly well last time, 24 points, but we gave up too many big plays. They ran the ball efficiently so we have to go out and play great. It’s got to be a team effort to go out and win in Oakland with a lot riding on the line for them.”

Jacoby Ford said he is ready to go on Sunday. So is Michael Huff.

“I’ll be out there,” Ford said. “If I practice this much this week and I’m not out there, I’d be mad. I’ll be out there, though.”

If he plays, it will be as a receiver, as Oakland will not gamble with Ford as a kick returner. Bryan McCann has done well enough to maintain that job and limit any risks with Ford.

Al Saunders stated, “Well, [Ford] has practiced and we are excited to see that. He is a very talented young man with great speed and he adds another dimension when he is able to be there. He has done a nice job this week. He hasn’t practiced fully, but he has been worked in and is very, very good at what he has done so we are excited about the possibility of him making a contribution.”

John Henderson will not play, and unless Oakland gets into the deep playoff run, don’t expect the veteran back on the field this season.

Saunders on the playoffs:

“You know what, that is funny because somebody asked me just before practice, what are the scenarios of the wild card? And in all honesty, I really don’t know. I just know that we have to win. And I know having been in this league for 30 years, you can’t control anything other than what you do. And all of our focus and all our attention and all of our energy has to be spent on what we need to do against the San Diego Chargers. And then after the game, the chips will fall where they may, but I really don’t know, and I don’t look at those things, it is wasted energy. We have got enough to worry about what is going to happen over there on Sunday at 1:00.”

NOTES

There is a lot of speculation surrounding the Chargers and whether it will be Norv Turner’s final game with the organization. As a Raider, Turner’s tenure ended after a 9-23 overall record and 1-11 divisional record, including a 0-6 mark against the west in 2005.

“This is a rival. They hate us and we hate them, and they want to spoil our playoff run,” said Michael Huff.

Weddle: “I love playing on the road, especially at Oakland.”

With a win and some help, the Silver & Black could either be a division winner, or a wild-card participant in the post-season. Either way, Oakland has to win and finish with an above .500 record for the first time since the 2002 season for a chance at the playoffs. “You have to embrace these moments because they don’t come around too often. You want to play your best football in the biggest games. As a competitor, you have to want that, but you have to enjoy it. It’s a fun time,” said Richard Seymour.

OAKLAND RAIDERS

On Offense:

Oakland has to continue the trend of pounding Michael Bush at the Chargers. In seven career games versus San Diego, Bush has amassed 490-yards rushing (4.3) and four touchdowns, including his record breaking 242-yards from scrimmage performance earlier in the season.

“We’ve been doing a good job sticking to it and not getting behind where we have to turn to pass situations,” stated the running back.

Oakland has to play from in-front and pound away at the Chargers front-seven in hopes of demoralizing them but more importantly, keeping the attack balanced against a defense that has 13-sacks in their last four games.

On Defense:

Chuck Bresnahan’s unit is under scrutiny, but they’ll get back safety Michael Huff and may have a motivated Tommy Kelly, who was bypassed on the Pro-Bowl selection process.

“[Huff] gives you another outstanding competitor and another outstanding football player,” Bresnahan was quoted this week. “We’ll see where he’s at and judge it as the week goes on.”

Oakland’s secondary will likely be under a lot of pressure with Norv Turner possibly coaching his last game in San Diego and Philip Rivers wanting to go out with gun’s blazing.

The Raiders need to get a heavy pass rush and contain tight end Antonio Gates.

In 17 games versus Oakland, Gates has compiled 69-catches for 934-yards and nine touchdowns. That duty will likely go to Mike Mitchell.

Kamerion Wimbley had four sacks earlier in the season at San Diego, but has only tallied three others the entire campaign. The Chargers have been forced into seven turnovers in their last three games against Oakland, mainly due to the pressure placed on Rivers.

Kamerion Wimbley sacks Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

On Offense:

Rivers has always been a closer, and nothing demonstrates that more than his 25-3 record as a starter in December.

Despite throwing a career high 19 interceptions, he was selected to the Pro Bowl roster. And with talk of Turner’s possible demise, he’s motivated to end the season strong.

“I think it is evident what I feel about [Turner],” Rivers said. “It has been an unusual year and a rough year. Hopefully everybody here, coaches included, will be able to gear up and go back at it next year.”

Rivers has thrown for 4,314 yards and is just the fourth quarterback in NFL history with four straight seasons over 4,000 yards. With one more touchdown pass, Rivers will become just the sixth quarterback in league history with at least 25 touchdown passes in four straight seasons.

On Defense:

Shaun Phillips has been a Raider-killer in his career, compiling 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 13-games against Oakland.

But it was Eric Weddle who made headlines this week, not just for his Pro Bowl nod, but his desire to keep the Silver & Black out of the playoffs.

“I don’t want the Raiders to go,” said Weddle, who is tied for the NFL lead with seven interceptions. “We have control over at least one more game, and who can go. “We’re going to try our hardest to spoil their postseason and keep them out of it.”

The Chargers have struggled with spread-offenses, so it will be interesting to see if Oakland puts the game on Palmer’s abilities, or do they try to re-establish a ground presence?

GAME NOTES

“Everybody in the locker room wants to win and wants to win now,” Shane Lechler said about the team’s playoff hopes. “My situation is, hopefully I get to see this thing go full circle. I had it great when I first got here. … Just to see it go full circle would be good.”

Carson Palmer on the importance of Sunday’s game: “These types of games, especially when you get to play them at home. These types of games are why you do what you do in February, March, April, May when nobody is watching. It’s why you stay up late at night watching film. This is why you do that, to be prepared. … This is a big moment for this team and our fans.”

Darren McFadden will be out.

For the first time in 16-years, all eight home games have been sold out.

DE Trevor Scott was named this year’s Ed Block Courage Award winner.

“I don’t know what the penalty thing is,” Tommy Kelly on Oakland’s record breaking penalty pace. “Coach stresses it, defensive coordinator stresses it, D-line coach stresses it.”

Jacoby Ford will play on Sunday. Taiwain Jones practiced, but could be a game-time decision.

KEY MATCHUPS

Rivers vs. Oakland’s Pass Rush/Secondary

It’s been a strange season for the fiery passer, who will miss the playoffs but go to Hawaii in a few weeks. He’s into the rivalry and a huge statistical game versus a rival and keeping them out of the playoffs will be his motivation on Sunday.

Bush-whacked

San Diego was mauled by the Oakland offensive line in their first meeting. It will be in the Raiders best interest to start the game by establishing themselves on the ground and keep pounding on a defense that may want to go home early for the winter.

PREDICTION

Since 2001, the Raiders have posted a 7-14 record against their rivals, but they currently have a three-game winning streak against San Diego. Since 2003 Raiderfans.net and their media arm SBReport.net has been at games covering these match-ups. We dug into our archive of photos and found some moments from those match-ups of the past decade:

In 2008, Andrew Walter came in for an injured JaMarcus Russell and finished 8/17 for 61-yards and a interception. Michael Bush only had two carries and then interim coach Tom Cable fell to 2-7. San Diego won, 34-7.

In 2005, defensive end DeLawrence Grant (#59) and Derrick Burgess (#56) got their hands on Drew Brees. San Diego’s passer was held to 164-yards, but LaDanian Tomlinson carried the football 31 times for 140-yards, while also passing for a score and hauling in a receiving touchdown during the Chargers 27-14 win.

Michael Bush (#29) broke Oakland’s team record for most yards from scrimmage in a game with 242 during their 24-17 victory in November.

Year after year, Oakland generated one of the league’s worst records and consistently found ways to tank it at the end of the campaign. In 2011, they have a chance at the playoffs and the team who hasn’t had a losing record since the 2003 season has a chance to spoil it all.

The San Diego Chargers are cherishing an opportunity to send their rivals packing for the winter.

“Oh yeah,” said Pro Bowl bound safety Eric Weddle. “I don’t want the Raiders to go. I don’t want Denver to go. I want us to go. We have control over one more game. We’ll try our hardest to spoil their seasons.”

The Raiders can clinch an AFC West title with a win and a Denver loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. A wild card berth can be had with a win, and help elsewhere as well.

“We don’t get paid to come in and mope around and lay down and b.s. through the last game,” stated Chargers guard Tyronne Green. “You’ve got to go out and try and give yourself some edge on next season. Going out on a loss makes it a long off-season. Better to go out with a win.”

Oakland will surely get help from Kansas City, as they aren’t planning to lay down and let Denver parade into games the following weekend.

“If some guys want to look at it as spoiling [Denver’s] season and that’s how we’ll get a win, then it is what it is,” commented Chiefs cornerback Javier Arenas.

This could mark the biggest game in Oakland since their AFC Championship game versus the Titans during the 2002 season.

It’s customary to see many Raider fans in San Diego when the two foes meet in Southern California. This weekend, I doubt we’ll see many Charger fans filling the seats at the O.co Coliseum.

Antonio Garay stated: “We all know the feeling between the Chargers and Raiders and their fans. They don’t like each other.”

Neither do the players. And for the first time in a long-time, the tables are turned on the field, so expect a lot of intensity on Sunday.

Michael Huff does not want to miss this Sunday’s match versus the San Diego Chargers. He intends to play due to the importance of the game after missing the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.

“This is a one-game season,” Huff said. “I’m going to go out there and play and give my all.”

The Oakland Raiders starting free safety was one of the more vocal players at the end of last year in their disappointment not making the playoffs, especially with a 6-0 divisional record. On Sunday, they need a win and a few other possible scenarios for them to taste the post-season.

“It feels good to be this close,” Huff said. “It’s been a while since it’s been like this around here. It’s a good feeling. We know we have to go out there and handle our business this week and everything will take care of itself.”

Taiwan Jones also thinks he can contribute this Sunday after weeks of inactivity. Oakland will re-evaluate him today and the true test will then be on Wednesday during practice. Jones will be a welcomed addition, especially since Michael Bush has carried the bulk of the ground attack, meeting career highs in rushing yards and rushes. Plus, a change of pace in the backfield could really alter the look of the run game.

Jacoby Ford and Darren McFadden are long shots to play and neither should be expected to be active.

Hue Jackson is happy with the situation Oakland is in. “There’s been a struggle to get to this position,” Jackson said. “[Everybody] knows this. It’s been well documented. But at the end of the day, to say that at the last game of the regular season, that you have a chance to have something special happen, that we’ve all talked about since Day one, that’s what you want.”

He may be saying that now, but the Raiders have blown chances all year to either snag victories late (i.e. Buffalo, Detroit), defend their home-field during a three game stretch versus rivals (i.e. Chiefs & Broncos) and were listless on the road (i.e. at Miami), all which contributed to the position they are in now.

A victory in any of those games could’ve had them controlling their own destiny or locked in already, instead of hoping for help in week-17.

If he believes his team is a playoff club, I’m sure he envisioned the Raiders getting a berth with no so much on the line with one game left. Nothing is guaranteed this weekend: a loss would be crippling, and a win and not the right breaks in other games will leave this team with a sour taste in their mouth.

PRO BOWL ANNOUNCEMENTS TODAY

Oakland could have a few players headed to the Pro Bowl, most notably kicker Sebastian Janikowski and punter Shane Lechler. Janikowski has never made the league’s all-star team, but his coach thinks he’s the only choice in the AFC this year.

“The guy is the best kicker in football,” Jackson said. “Are you kidding me? In my opinion, hands down. If he doesn’t make the Pro Bowl this year, then something is wrong. He should already have stock over there in the Pro Bowl and he doesn’t. He should. I’d be very disappointed if his name doesn’t show up. He’s as good as there is in football. Period.”

SAN DIEGO

Reality struck safety Eric Weddle really hard this weekend when his Chargers were eliminated from playoff contention. But that quickly changed, as now they want to cherish the role of spoiler in keeping their rivals out of the playoffs.

“I don’t want the Raiders to go. We have control over at least one more game, and who can go,” Weddle said. “We’re going to try our hardest to spoil their postseason and keep them out of it.”

Oakland may look at the tape of the Lions game and read Norv Turner’s comments and use that as a plan of attack this weekend.

“A lot of it is matchups and the style of offense. We have not played well against a wide-open spread offense,” Turner said of last Sunday’s loss. “We’ve struggled against teams that spread you out and use three or four receivers. Obviously their tight end had a big day. We were concerned about that going in. I thought we’d play better than we played, though.”

It’s all come down to this for the Oakland Raiders (8-7)…

A victory versus the San Diego Chargers (7-8) and a loss for the Denver Broncos (8-7), and they’ll be AFC West champions.

The Kansas City Chiefs (6-9) will have to go on the road and notch their fourth win away from Arrowhead against Tim Tebow for Oakland to have their first division title since 2002.

Just weeks ago, Oakland was atop the division – sitting pretty. But a three-game losing streak and Tebow’s miraculous run catapulted the Broncos to first-place. Denver has lost two in a row and Oakland pulled out an overtime victory on Saturday to give them a shot at making the post-season.

Hue Jackson said after the game at Kansas City: “I keep telling you people that his team is not going to quit. We are not perfect, I understand that. But we are a group of men that will fight and keep playing and they’ll play it out to the end.”

They’ll have to continue to fight to extend their current three-game winning streak against the Chargers. Oakland swept Norv Turner’s team in 2010 and won at San Diego November 10, 24-17.

They’ve done it without Darren McFadden and Jacoby Ford. Denver’s late slide could open the door for a division crown. The defense has buckled that last few weeks when trying to put away games, but they remain alive.

Oakland can also win a wild card if they win and get help from the Baltimore Ravens, who face the Cincinnati Bengals on the last weekend of the regular season.

The Raiders could be a 4th seed as division champs and face either the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Ravens at the O.co Coliseum. It’s foreseeable that either road team could be favorites on the road, as neither is a favorable match-up for the Silver & Black.

If by chance Oakland gets the 6th seed, they could face the Houston Texans, in a rematch of their week-five meeting. The Raiders defeated the Texans 25-20, on the weekend Al Davis passed away.

With their injuries, lack of post-season experience and Oakland’s late season scamper to get in, it may be the opportune time to pick them off. A loss against the Titans would give Houston a three-game losing streak going into the playoffs. And with a victory already at that site, Oakland could be more of a threat in that position than at home against a physical Ravens club with a shifty, dynamic rusher (Ray Rice) and a stout defense, or a veteran Steeler club that can win at any venue with their clutch quarterback and physical defense.

Oakland was hurt last year when they went 6-0 within their division and missed making the playoffs, needing a lot of help to get in and losing key games down the stretch.

“It’s just tough because all through training camp, we knew that we had a team that could win the (AFC) West, make the playoffs and compete,” Michael Huff said in December of 2010. “I guess we’re not going to get the chance.”

Not getting a shot this year would hurt twice as much due to squandering opportunities and getting a shot at it on the final week of the season. With Davis’ passing and the lofty and boisterous expectations of their head coach, an 8-8 finish this time around or no playoffs, even with the injuries they have withstood and happenings in 2011, would be a major disappointment.

It was Jackson who wanted to build a bully. It was Jackson who took over a team that already had reached .500 last season. It was Jackson who planted that seed in his player’s minds that they were playoff ready. Can they actually get in now?

They had a three-game home stretch versus the Browns, Chiefs and Broncos, with a bye sandwiched in, and failed to get separation. After losing their starting passer for the year with an injury, they picked up Carson Palmer to salvage the season and possibly carry them further. They would have been stuck with Kyle Boller otherwise, a move that really changed their season and that many other teams either wouldn’t be able to make, or wouldn’t pull off – a rarity in this league to pick-up a passer of that magnitude within a season.

Pick-ups like Aaron Curry and Bryan McCann have worked. Having depth at running back helped, as any other team that would’ve lost their most dynamic presence on offense, could’ve been crippled. But Oakland had a suitable back up at their area of strength.

They lost a very good edge rusher for the year, but again, at a unit where depth is not a concern.

People could point to Campbell’s injury, Davis’ death and other happenings as major reasons why they could’ve folded. But in fact, they have had just as many opportunities placed on their laps and been given second and third chances to get back into the post-season.

One week from now, they’ll either be kicking themselves for not taking making a stop at Buffalo, tanking it at home against the Chiefs, Broncos and on the road at Miami and squandering a late lead versus the Lions, or preparing for a wild-card playoff game, their first since January 12, 2002, when they defeated the Jets 38-24, before falling the following weekend during the infamous ‘Tuck Rule’ contest.
