A Look Back: New England Patriots vs. Oakland Raiders (2008)

October 1st, 2011 No comments

In 2008, the New England Patriots went into Oakland and walloped the Raiders, 49-26.

Randy Moss tallied 5-catches for 67-yards in his return to the Bay-Area. Two of those receptions were touchdowns, and on both occasions, he pointed to the back of his jersey, as if the crowd needed any more fuel to jeer the ex-Raider.

“That’s just Randy being Randy,” said Patriots LaMont Jordan, who added a 49-yard touchdown run against his former team. “I was definitely happy for him, especially the way the Oakland media had no good things to say about him. … We came here together to wear the Oakland uniform and to try to turn that program around. It didn’t work out and we both left on bad terms.”

Here’s a look back at the Game Grades for this contest:

Al Davis talks about Gruden, whether he is demanding & more

January 18th, 2011 No comments

randy_mossOakland Raiders owner Al Davis had an intimate briefing with local beat writers and SBReport.net was there to capture audio of the owner talking candidly about other musings. Davis was candid about many topics; here are some of the highlights…

On Jon Gruden and trading him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

“Oh no….no I don’t. Not at all, because…look, Jon beat us in the goddamn Super Bowl. That’s the only thing I regret.”

“Take a look at Jon’s performance at Tampa.” Then Davis stated that he beat his Raiders with “Dungy’s team.”

On Hue Jackson’s contract terms:

“Well, I’m not telling you!,”

Are you demanding on coaches:

“No, that’s B.S,” when asked if he was demanding on coaches. “Yeah, I’m demanding of doing it right and being right and treating players right. I’m a great believer that you praise players. For awhile here, between Kiffin and that other fellow, they were knocking the players.”

“If I’m demanding, I’m sorry that I am, but I don’t think I am.”

On his projection for the team:

“We have the talent to get into the playoffs…”

On Randy Moss:

“New England got a lesson the other day.” He continued, “If they kept [Randy Moss], they would’ve beaten the Jets.”

He mentioned the regrets in trading Randy Moss, stating that every coach is afraid of him.

On Randy Hanson:

“How he broke his jaw, I don’t know.”

Raider fans react on Twitter about Merriman & Moss

November 2nd, 2010 No comments

randy_mossThe San Diego Chargers turned out the lights on Shawne Merriman and the Minnesota Vikings disposed of Randy Moss to start the week. Via my Twitter account, I asked fans of the Oakland Raiders which one of the two would you want on the roster. Here were some responses:

Shawne Merriman by far. At least he’d be able to play against his old team and is an actual LEADER. Moss is a overrated cancer. – RaiderinNY

def merriman he would compliment our lindbackers pass rush nicely he is gonna wanna prove he still got it. – BigGriff28

moss could help. More Teams still double Moss. Dmc/bush wouldn’t see 8 in box It would also help Miller Dhb/Murphy more single coverage – Dan905

Moss has drama & Merriman is damaged goods … Both would be nice, but that’s a Big Chunk of $$$ – BiGGSLiNKYd0GG

Merriman for sure. Moss is like a plague. – CCRaiderNation

I’d go with merriman he always liked raider fans – King_Swaggz

dont want or need either of those distractions..come on..we’re jellin – bamartinez

I will be happy with either seriously….moss and merriman are good vets have made their own marks in history – klone187

Oakland Raiders: Linked to Randy Moss, not a bad idea

November 1st, 2010 No comments

MossAs soon as the news broke that the Minnesota Vikings jettisoned Randy Moss, the Oakland Raiders were linked as a destination for the controversial receiver.

“Randy is very sad to find out about being waived by the Vikings this morning,” Moss’ agent Joel Segal wrote in an e-mail to the Star Tribune. “He has and always will remain fond of the fans in Minnesota. We will let the process of the waiver wire take its course and we will move on from there.”

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that Moss could be pursued by at least ten clubs, one of them being the Silver & Black.

First, Moss will go through waivers and teams with worse records will have a shot at claiming the remainder of his contract. Which means the winless Buffalo Bills have first crack at him. If they pass, every ensuing team ranked by record can pick up the remaining $3.888 million on his deal for 2010.

Tom Cable stated in his conference on Monday, “We have an interest in anyone we think can help us.”

“It’s just it hasn’t been a discussion yet and then the fact that it just happened and there’s so much that has to go on.”

When asked about the likelihood of landing Moss, Cable commented, “Well, I wouldn’t [rule it out]. I don’t think you ever do if you think it can make your team better.”

Oakland acquired Moss originally in 2005 for linebacker Napoleon Harris and their 1st overall selection (7th overall) and seventh round picks.

Upon his arrival, Moss stated, “I am very flattered to be here and anxious to be in this situation.

“I want to get back to being a dangerous player.”

That never occurred, as he sulked and wasted away, becoming a malcontent and disinterested after posting 102 catches for 1,558 yards and 11 scores. The following season in New England, Moss regained his All-Pro form with 98-receptions for 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Oakland in return got a 4th round choice that wound up being cornerback John Bowie.

The Raiders have 13-teams in front of them based on records for the waiver claim. If Moss clears waivers, he’s free to sign anywhere.

For half a season. For a team that has no pop at wide receiver and inconsistency at that position. For a team that cannot depend on a fragile Chaz Schilens and a injured Louis Murphy. This could be a solid move. Yes, Darrius Heyward-Bey is coming off his best game as a pro. Yes, the offense has tallied immense numbers the last two weeks. And yes, the chemistry of this young club should not be messed with.

But again, for half a season, in a division that is up for grabs…

Oakland shouldn’t hesitate re-acquiring Moss in an attempt to squeeze the last bit of talent he has, as he will be playing for his final contract next off-season.

Remember, it was Lane Kiffin that wanted Moss off the team, not Al Davis.

A Look Back: Raiders vs. 49ers (2006)

October 16th, 2010 No comments

Justim FargasThe Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers will battle for Bay Area bragging rights this weekend.

Last time the Raiders and 49ers met, Oakland was defeated 34-20 in San Francisco on October 8, 2006 (week-5). During that contest, Alex Smith tossed three touchdown passes, two to Arnaz Battle, as the 49ers scored 27-second half points. Frank Gore rushed for a then career high 134-yards for offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who had coached the Silver & Black the prior two campaigns.

For Oakland, Andrew Walter was benched for Marques Tuiasosopo, LaMont Jordan dropped a lateral, disregarded the loose football and Melvin Oliver returned it for a score. Then Raider Randy Moss tallied his 100th career touchdown reception in the losing effort.

“I don’t see any improvement with what we’re doing,” defensive tackle Warren Sapp commented. “We don’t make a play. We don’t make an adjustment to get momentum back on our side.”

Raiders’ Asomugha clearly the best CB in the NFL

September 29th, 2010 No comments

Nnamdi_Asomugha_2Three weeks into the NFL season and there is no denying who is the best cornerback in the league. That distinction belongs to the Oakland Raiders Nnamdi Asomugha.

Darrelle Revis and his New York Jets captured headlines all off-season and during the pre-season. Their vocal coach proclaimed Revis not just the best defensive back in the league, but the best defensive player around.

A television show and divisive hold out later, Revis supporters would have thought that their guy would have been head and shoulders above the rest.

This is the same Revis that was heralded after match-ups against Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Marques Colston and Chad Ochocinco. This after a fabulous performance in 2009 that catapulted him to notoriety, and was capped by a playoff run where he shined and his club was one win from the Super Bowl.

But that was one season.

Revis wanted ‘Asomugha type’ money for 2010. He missed four pre-season games and caused an uproar all summer before landing a deal reportedly worth $46 million, including $32 million guaranteed.

He got his money, but he also got smoked by the receiver he called a ‘slouch.’ Former Raiders and now New England Patriot Randy Moss hauled in a 34-yard touchdown grab against Revis this season. And after the play, the cornerback who was touted as the best and was spirited about getting top billing at his position was grabbing his hamstring in pain.

As he sits now and watches from the sideline, maybe he can get a better perspective at the cornerback in Oakland that has a résumé dating back to 2006.

Asomugha tallied eight interceptions that year during a break out campaign. From 2007 through 2009, he has been a Pro Bowl selection. But more importantly, at the start of the 2010 season, he has proven again to be the ultimate defender at corner in the NFL.

Last weekend, against arguably the biggest threat the league has at wide receiver – Larry Fitzgerald – Asomugha allowed one reception. The other lone catch Fitzgerald had during that contest wasn’t even against Asomugha.

“To me, it wasn’t good enough because he did get the catch,” Asomugha said. “That’s what upset me. (But) then against a guy like Larry, that can happen. A guy like that comes around once a decade.”

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan

Oakland coaches won’t get in front of a microphone and spout of bravado regarding their defender. Nor will you see a player in Oakland get as much coverage as a hold out in New York City.

But at this point, it is clear who the top cornerback in the league is. And there was a reason why Revis wanted ‘Asomugha type’ money…

He wants what Asomugha has – and everything that comes with it.

Being recognized the best overall cornerback in the league.

A Look Back: Raiders vs. Cardinals

September 24th, 2010 No comments

burgess_leinartThe last time the Oakland Raiders faced the Arizona Cardinals in the regular season, was in October 22, 2006 at the Oakland Alameda-County Coliseum.

Oakland was victorious 22-9, as Randy Moss lit up the Cardinals secondary with 7-receptions for 129-yards and one touchdown. Then rookie Mat Leinart was shaky, going 13-for-32 for 203-yards and two interceptions.

“He was flustered,” safety Stuart Schweigert stated after the game. “His eyes were wide open. He was throwing the ball away real quick.”

The Raiders were led by Andrew Walter, who tossed the ball 30-times, recording 17-completions for 263-yards with one touchdown and a interception.

In 2008, both teams met in the pre-season with the Cardinals winning 24-0.

Then Raiders’ rookie Darren McFadden rushed for 40-yards on 12-carries.

Here are some images from our archives from both of those contest captured by SBReport.net and Raiderfans.net photographers:

Monday Morning Musings: Moss, Burgess and Goodell

December 15th, 2008 No comments

Randy Moss pointed to the back of his jersey on both touchdowns yesterday during the New England Patriots 49-26 thrashing of the dreary Oakland Raiders.

As he needed any more attention drawn to him.

The crowd knew who it was and he enjoyed rubbing it in; as the former Raider had a victorious return to the Bay area with his 5 receptions for 67 yards and 2 scores. Heck, he even went up against the pride and joy of the Raider Nation – Nnamdi Asomugha – and drew a couple of flags on the steady cornerback while making a few receptions on the one player the Silver & Black have that is in the stratosphere with him. Ok…maybe not.

Moss showed the fans in Oakland how he plays when he wants to play. And he showed them how he can perform when he cares about football, or when he has an agenda against the opponent.

“That’s just Randy being Randy,” said LaMont Jordan, another ex-Raider who made a successful return to the Black Hole. “I was definitely happy for him, especially the way the Oakland media had no good things to say about him. … We came here together to wear the Oakland uniform and to try to turn that program around. It didn’t work out and we both left on bad terms.”

The team jettisoned Moss when he wanted no part of an organization that was floundering. They traded him for a fourth round draft selection (John Bowie) and ridded themselves of a malcontent that could’ve caused way more damage than he did in his two seasons.

Moss’ vindication didn’t come when he romped through the Raiders secondary. Yeah, he wanted to show Raider Nation what type of player he really is per Wes Welker. “I think it meant a lot to him,” said his fellow receiver. “There was a lot of focus on Randy this week, just like every week. But you could tell he wanted this game and really wanted to show what kind of player he is.”

His vindication came when he was moved to a team that demanded respect from him that could corral his volatility and channel that talent onto what matters – winning on the field.

Moss’ return to limelight last season and the statistical epic regular season and playoff run he had with Tom Brady were enough of ‘I told you so…’, for those that casted him off. And Moss’ march towards the Hall of Fame is what ultimately people will remember, not his exiled time in Oakland.

THE COMMISH IN OAKLAND

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was in attendance yesterday. He met with the media at halftime and spoke on a few topics:

WHY COME HERE NOW, COMMISSIONER?

“I try to get around to every stadium every couple of years. I haven’t been out here yet so…this is a game that we had picked a couple of months ago. I’m glad I’m here.”

YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF THIS STADIUM FACILITY AND THE AREA? ONE OF THE OLDEST IN THE NFL?

“It is. And it’s something that we’ve been meeting with a lot of people today about how to address that from a long-term standpoint. It’s clear, and I think everyone accepts it, that something has to get done here with a new stadium at some point. And I’ve had a chance to talk to some of the leadership here about how we can help in that process.

“There are a lot of passionate fans here, as you know, from talking to fans here.”

THE RAIDERS HAVE NOT BEEN COMPETITIVE FOR SOME TIME. DOES IT FALL WITHIN YOUR REALM AS COMMISSIONER TO ADDRESS?

“Not individually, no. Competitiveness…I think we’ve got a very competitive league. The Dolphins showed how fast you can turn a franchise around. The Atlanta Falcons have showed how fast you can turn a franchise around.

“This franchise has been competitive for decades. I’m sure Mr. Davis and the Raiders are going to turn that around.”

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR THE RAIDERS TO REMAIN HERE IN OAKLAND ? THEIR LEASE IS UP IN A COUPLE OF YEARS.

“I think it’s important for all of our teams to stay in their communities. This is something we’ve focused on a n awful lot over the last 10 or 15 years, in trying to make sure we create an environment where the team can be successful, the community can be successful and together they can create a partnership that’s going to do great things for the fans and the community.”

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US ANY OF YOUR MEETING WITH AL DAVIS?

“No. Nothing that is significant. We talked about a variety of different issues. I don’t mean it was that secretive.”

SO, YOU CAN’T DIVULGE ANY DETAILS?

“No, we had a good dialogue about a variety of things that are happening in the league. And that’s part of what I do when I go to markets is want to hear from owners, I want to hear from club people, I want to hear from fans, I want to hear from the media.”

BURGESS A NON FACTOR

Derrick Burgess has no sacks since his return to the line-up after missing six games due to injury. He has 1.5 sacks all season and none in the Raiders last four games. And with the lack of pressure they’ve applied in recent weeks, it’s becoming more obvious the glaring need to generate more of a pass rush.

Burgess had hopes for a big season after injuries slowed him early last year. He ended 2007 strong and the Raiders felt he would get back to his dominant 2005 and 2006 form when he compiled 27 sacks and had back-to-back pro bowl appearances.

With one year remaining left on his 5-year deal, Burgess has to show in 2009 that he will be deserving of the raise he felt he should’ve got before the start of last season.
