Darrius Heyward-Bey: Raiders getting the best out of third-year player

October 11th, 2011 No comments

Don’t look now, but Darrius Heyward-Bey is playing the best football of his three-year career.

The Oakland Raiders’ first round pick in the 2009 draft has been ridiculed many times since entering the league for his lofty draft status and meek production. But in recent weeks, he’s put together the best stretch of his career and looking every bit of the receiver many thought he couldn’t be.

Against the Patriots, he tallied four catches for 115-yards. One of those receptions was a nicely ran deep out on 3rd and 10 for 16-yards and a 58-yard catch. On Sunday, Heyward-Bey posted seven-catches for 99-yards and one touchdown.

Two receptions tallying 36-yards preceded his 34-yard score. That drive was all Heyward-Bey, magnified in importance due to Cooper Carlisle’s holding penalty prior to the touchdown that wiped out a Darren McFadden 41-yard romp.

Jason Allen gave the speedster a clean release off the line of scrimmage, DHB hauled in the quick hitch from Jason Campbell and then he broke the cornerback’s tackle on his way to paydirt.

The player selected ahead of Kenny Britt, Michael Crabtree, Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin and Hakeem Nicks was getting pushed by Hue Jackson since last season and in July, he was quoted: “As I said we need more out of every last one of our players. Is [Heyward-Bey] one of the players that need to step up and bring more to the table? Yes he is and I think they all do and I think they all understand that because that’s how I conduct business. I want the best out of our players, I expect it, I demand it, and I’m going to get it.”

After the game versus the Texans, Jackson commented, “He made some plays and I keep telling you guys, Darrius is rising.”

Better separation, cleaner routes, and budding confidence have led to better statistics. In four games played, DHB is only 10-catches away from his career high (26) and only 103-yards from surpassing his high mark in that category (366).

“I’m very happy for Darrius,” stated Jackson.

On ESPN, one of his biggest critics, ex-Vikings wide receiver Chris Carter said, “It is really nice that guys that Al Davis drafted, on this day, the first Sunday that he wasn’t running the organization since the mid 60s, that they would make contributions.”

He continued, “Darrius Heyward-Bey, a guy that I often criticized coming out of Maryland for his lack of ball skills, his lack of ability to stay healthy or his lack of ability to make big plays, transitioning from the college game into the pro game, it was nice….”

Todd McShay on draft: Mallet could fall to no. 48

February 27th, 2011 No comments
Marques Tuiasosopo was taken in the 2nd round by the Oakland Raiders

Marques Tuiasosopo was taken in the 2nd round by the Oakland Raiders

ESPN’s NFL draft expert Todd McShay answered one question regarding each team in the AFC West in a blog. He gave insight on what prospects may be a good fit for the Oakland Raiders at quarterback.

Here’s the excerpt:

“They have other needs, but if there is a guy like [Nevada’s] Colin Kaepernick is there in the third round, that could be a good fit. He has a big arm that the Raiders like. [TCU’s] Andy Dalton isn’t a perfect fit because of his arm, but it’s good enough. He could be a fit in the third round. I tell you what, [Arkansas’] Ryan Mallett could easily fall all the way down to No. 48. Oakland would have to think about it. He has the big arm. He is a risk, but he is an incredible value at No. 48.”

Here’s a look at the quarterbacks selected by the Raiders in recent memory:

JaMarcus Russell (1st round 2007)

One of the biggest busts in league history.

Andrew Walter (3rd round 2005)

Was best known for taking a beating during the 2006 season, behind a horrific offensive line.

Ronald Curry (7th round 2002)

Drafted as a passer, converted into a serviceable wide receiver.

Marques Tuiasosopo (2nd round 2001)

Career back-up who never got a shot to lead the Silver & Black. Had a chance to start in 2003, but sustained knee injury versus Lions.

**************

Hue Jackson has insisted that he’s happy with the current crop of targets on the Silver & Black, but you have to wonder what would have been going through the Raiders’ mind this morning if they had a selection in the first round after seeing Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones’ 4.39 40-yard dash and 11’3 broad jump. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, and coming off a 78-catch 1,100 yard campaign with seven scores in the SEC, it would have been enticing for the Raiders to give him a serious look.

ESPN: Tom Cable unlikely to return to Oakland Raiders

January 2nd, 2011 No comments

Tom-Cable-03aESPN’s Adam Schefter got the news ball rolling on Tom Cable’s future with the Oakland Raiders.

He reported that the Oakland Raiders are not likely to bring back Cable in 2011 as head football coach.

This should be interesting, because the Silver & Black have a history of denying such reports from Schefter and other ESPN reporters. They also have a history of doing an about face after denials.

Oakland cannot drag the process out as in year’s past. Al Davis must inform Cable by January 18 whether he intends to pick up a one-year, $2.5 million option on Cable’s contract.

Speculation has been rampant all season about Hue Jackson’s future as well, and how he could be the coach in waiting if Oakland decides to move forward.

Reports: Raiders open to trade anyone on the roster

October 17th, 2010 No comments

thomas_howardThe Oakland Raiders, per reports from ESPN, are having their yearly fire sale. Adam Schefter tweeted “Done it before and doing it again: With trade deadline Tuesday, Raiders have informed teams they’re willing to trade any player on roster.”

According to league sources, the Silver & Black are gauging the interest of teams regarding players on their roster. Linebacker Thomas Howard and cornerback Chris Johnson are two that have been talked about.

Howard lost his starting job this season and has played as a reserve mostly. Johnson is also expendable with the youth Oakland has acquired in recent years on their secondary.

Last year, ESPN reported that Oakland would be willing to deal with other clubs and talk about trade possibilities with any player they had under contract.

Raiders denying a ESPN report — Again!

September 1st, 2010 1 comment

Al_Davis_SB_FPThe Oakland Raiders issued a statement on their official web site and Twitter account stating:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is once again making untrue statements about The Oakland Raiders, this time regarding Matt Leinart. The Raiders have never discussed trading for Leinart.

The Raiders are very happy about their quarterback situation.

The Silver & Black has had a history with ESPN and their reporters, with the club vehemently denying information that has been disseminated by the likes of Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen.

In January of 2009, Mortensen reported on ‘NFL Countdown’ that the team was negotiating to sell a major percentage over to a billionaire investor who had interest in moving the franchise to Los Angeles.

Raiders chief executive Amy Trask stated after the report: “Chris contacted no one with the Raiders to ascertain if there was any truth to his report. There is not.”

Mortensen responded with an email to The Associated Press commenting, “The Raiders have lost the privilege with me of running stories past them for comment. This stems from their history of denials to most stories I have reported — as well as others in the media — when those stories have eventually proven to be true.”

Owner Al Davis has even shot back at Mortensen, calling him “a professional liar,” during the Lane Kiffin fiasco.

Schefter reported this morning that three teams showed interest in Leinart and that the Raiders were one of those clubs actively looking into acquiring his services.

ESPN: ‘My Wish’ Series with the Raiders

July 17th, 2010 No comments

Jailen_Cooper008Starting Sunday, July 18, ESPN will continue to present SportsCenter’s “My Wish” series, which details sports-themed wished granted to children with life threatening medical conditions in collaboration with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

On that day, the story of Jailen Cooper will be chronicled. The 10-year old from Farmville North Carolina who has pituitary germinoma, got a chance to spend a day with the Oakland Raiders.

In a press release disseminated yesterday, Jailen’s mother, Jessie, talked about his wish with the Silver & Black:

“I wasn’t expecting everything that the Raiders did for Jailen. The locker was amazing, and everything he got to do on the field, it’s not something that he’s ever going to forget.”

Also in the release:

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2010, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 193,000 wishes in the United States since its inception. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit wish.org and discover how you can share the power of a wish®.

SBReport.net was there when Jailen was in attendance. Here are some more images of that wonderful day at Raiders camp:

ESPN’s Clayton: Raiders, T.O would make sense

May 17th, 2010 2 comments

terrell_owens-300x286ESPN’s John Clayton posted an article today regarding Terrell Owens and how he would be a good fit for the Oakland Raiders.

Clayton states, “Owens would make sense now that the Raiders have turned over their offense to Jason Campbell.”

“Still, he’s the best receiver on the street. He had 829 receiving yards last season, more than any other receiver without a job. His average of 15.1 yards per catch was respectable. But price is the problem. He might not be willing to sign for less than $5 million, and it’s doubtful this year’s free-agent market will deliver that kind of windfall.”

The mercurial target could easily become the Raiders best target if they chose to go that route. Oakland’s wide receivers are either raw, un-proven or in the infancy stages of their development.

Their best wide receiver in 2009, Louis Murphy, was a rookie who had his ups and downs and only managed 34-receptions for 521-yards and 4 touchdowns.

Chaz Schilens is considered their number one guy, but that’s by default considering the weakness of the corps.

SBreport.net analyzed the current wide receiver situation for the Raiders in a piece published on May 5th, located here:

And on March 11th, Owens being bantered as a possible destination was detailed here:

Raiders: Ice Cube, ESPN fumbles documentary

May 12th, 2010 4 comments

Ice_Cube“Doing a documentary is a lot different than doing a movie,” – Ice Cube

Yesterday, ESPN aired Ice Cube’s “30 for 30″ documentary “Straight Outta L.A.” The nostalgic look back at the now Oakland Raiders stint in Los Angeles would have fit right at home on VH1 or MTV, but it was out of place on the sports network and quite frankly, did nothing but prove to be a self indulgent piece for the rapper, actor and director who professes his love for the franchise.

It was a look back at the influence the Silver & Black had on the city of Los Angeles, mostly during the West-Coast rap movement where it seemed that every rapper who catapulted onto music videos had some sort of Raiders fan-gear. How both that rap scene and the Los Angeles football team were synonymous; spreading like wildfire during an era in which Ice Cube rose to popularity.

Quite frankly, unless you are a completely out of the loop and had no recollections of what went on during that period, there was nothing in this ‘documentary’ that would enlighten the viewer.

The associations with the street life, violence and many negatives aspect that arose from those donning Silver & Black and the relationship with the team were overly emphasized. “That team represented the L.A. I knew,” Cube explained. “It wasn’t the ‘Showtime’ Lakers, where people saw the glitz and the glamour. It wasn’t the ’84 Olympics. It was a little more grimy, and the Raiders represented that, in South Central [where they played]. They had the whole city on lock. To me, [this project] is the true representation of music and sports.”

Yes, the player’s accounts of what happened during that period were a nice touch. The footage presented and presentation were adequate, but it failed to really engage, while being manic and painfully disappointing with its lack of direction and objective.

If Ice Cube was trying to self promote, give his personal account and views, gratify himself  by boasting about his career and emphasize the importance of the team to his life – then mission accomplished.

Otherwise, NFL Films and other stellar presenters of sports documentaries have nothing to worry about after seeing Ice Cube’s effort and none of those other creative and very appealing presenters of history won’t ever be asking the former gangsta rapper to produce or direct any future features.

Even the interview with Al Davis lacked depth and seemed very shallow, only made interesting by the aging owner who is quite frank and is very captivating whenever he talks. And with his declining age, anytime he speaks, all Raider fans listen, whether they love or despise him.

Ultimately, the best part about it was Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke, who has worked for the publication since 1996. The regular ESPN contributor, who has displayed quite a personality working such shows as ‘Around the Horn,’ poignantly stated what the Raiders meant to Los Angeles and how that melting pot embraced everything Raiders. In closing the presentation, the best was delivered when Plaschke stated:

When I think of the L.A Raiders, I think of a hidden L.A. I think of the L.A that nobody notices. I think of the LA that showed up every Sunday madder than hell, wanting to take on the world. The kind of L.A that you don’t see on TV, the kind of L.A that comes from Mexico, the kind of L.A that comes from inner cities all over this country. When I think of the Raiders I think of the heartbeat of Los Angeles. And some if it we didn’t like, and some of it wasn’t very pretty, and some of it wasn’t very fun but it was who we are and just like that it was gone.

Oh, in reply to Ice Cube’s statement: “The silver and black might call another place home, but the Raiders will always belong to L.A.”

Violator

This may be true in your eyes, but the Raiders are Oakland.

The history of the Raiders was beautifully depicted in HBO’s documentary, ‘Rebels of Oakland: The A’s, the Raiders, the ’70s,’ aired in 2003.  If you want to see the social, economical and civil attachment that is deeply rooted in the city of Oakland and how the Raiders are part of the fabric of that town, please view that special and enjoy a real perspective on what the Raiders are all about and how they will always belong to the Bay Area.

Trestman, Harbaugh, Fassel, Jackson, Cable…Raiders, PICK ONE ALREADY!

January 20th, 2010 No comments

CableReports today have circulated about the Oakland Raiders reaching out to current Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. Even though no decision has been made regarding Tom Cable’s future, insiders have stated that Harbaugh was talked about being their next coach, but the former NFL quarterback was not interested in the job.

Jim Fassel has also been rumored about for some time now, but he trashed any thoughts of him throwing his own hat into the ring on Sirius.XM Radio on Wednesday commenting, “I’m not lobbying for the Raider job. I have never in my life rooted for a coach to be let go so there’s an opening. I never have.”

Fassel, who is the head coach of the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL, has had his name come up in the past when Oakland had openings and his son – John – is the current special teams coordinator for the Silver & Black.

Other names such as Winston Moss and Marc Trestman have also surfaced.

SBReport.net learned on January 12th that Trestman was a leading candidate if there was an opening and that Oakland had serious interest in the current coach of the Montreal Alouettes that play in the Canadian Football League.

Cable has been in limbo since the end of the 2009 season. And per John Herrera, both Al Davis and Cable have talked while other coaches have contacted Oakland for positions.

“Most of the characterizations of Al Davis’ meetings with the head coach being short or brief are not true either,” Herrera said. “Mr. Davis has had meetings of some depth with the head coach. There have been meetings and meetings of substance.”

He continued: “A lot of people have called inquiring about coaching positions.”

ESPN has reported that Hue Jackson is under consideration to take over as the offensive coordinator.

Many of these rumors can lead you to believe that Davis may still be considering keeping Cable and delegating other duties to new staffers. As stated in an article on SBREPORT.NET, Davis could be setting up varying parameters for Cable’s return.

Or, Davis is testing the waters to see what’s available if and when he decides to pull the plug on Cable.

Al_Davis_Sign

Either way, Davis’ actions right now are very undermining and not very loyal. Especially if he’s partaking in these interviews with candidates such as Jackson to comply with the Rooney Rule.

Cable right now appears like a puppet; a coach who is just in purgatory.

But one thing he has been is loyal. And more importantly, a guy who wants the job and has shown great pride in being the Raiders coach.
