Keller gets a second chance in S&B

June 25th, 2008 No comments

By Eric Strauss, S&B Report Staff Columnist

It doesn’t seem that long ago that an oft-injured, undrafted former college star dazzled Raider fans in preseason 1999, when Scott Dreisbach won a spot on the roster despite a broken leg.

Last night, the Raiders rolled the dice on another oft-injured former college quarterback, signing Nebraska’s Sam Keller, who tried out at the rookie minicamp earlier this year.

Keller, who was not signed after the May session, had failed to win a contract in a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after April’s draft, and signed a three-year deal with the Arena Football League’s Los Angeles Avengers on May 30.

To make room for Keller on the roster, the Raiders cut fifth-string quarterback Erik Meyer, a free agent signed this offseason.

Suspect arrested in Javon Walker attack

June 24th, 2008 No comments

Las Vegas authorities have made an arrest in the robbery and beating case of Oakland Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker.

On Tuesday, police Lt. Clinton Nichols stated that 30-year old Arfat Fadel, who was arrested on Friday, is suspected of multiple felonies, including kidnapping and robbery.

Officials are still looking for a second suspect, who they still believe is in Las Vegas.

Walker, 29, was found unconscious on June 16 at an intersection near the Las Vegas Strip with varying injuries. Lt. Nichols has informed the press that the Raider receiver got into a vehicle with two men the night of the attack. Walker then informed the police that $3,000 in cash and about $100,000 in jewelry were stolen after a night of partying in clubs and casinos.

Walker was treated at a Las Vegas hospital right after and was released last Wednesday prior to making his return to Oakland in preparations for the upcoming season.

The Raiders signed the former Packer and Bronco on March 4 to a six-year $55-million deal hoping that he will become their ‘go to’ receiver after ranking at the bottom of the league in passing yards in 2007.

Rough start in Oakland for Javon Walker

June 18th, 2008 No comments

Javon Walker

By Victor Cotto, S&B Report Staff Columnist

The start of Javon Walker’s career with the Oakland Raiders has been turbulent and should be of great concern to an organization in dire of need of a big time playmaker at wide receiver.

After signing a six-year $55 million deal in the off-season – an already questionable move considering knee problems in 2007 that limited his production and a inability to string back-to-back solid seasons since 2004 – the Silver & Black believed they acquired a ‘go to’ target for JaMarcus Russell and a motivated player that was primed to face the club that jettisoned him back in February as a divisional rival in 2008. But since his acquisition, what they have gotten is a receiver who is still healing injuries from last season and that has put himself in a dangerous predicament off the field a year after a teammate died in his arms.

Darrell Strong (45) — One of a few tight ends looking to round out a slim unit

By Victor Cotto, S&B Report Staff Columnist

There is no denying that Zach Miller is atop the depth chart and will be a key cog in the Oakland Raiders’ offense this season after his 44 grabs, 444 yards and three touchdowns during his rookie campaign. His rapport with JaMarcus Russell was showcased in the regular season finale, as the draft mates hooked up for 8 receptions for 84 yards against the San Diego Chargers. But who will round out that unit and what will Lane Kiffin look for when selecting which tight ends join Miller on that squad?
