John Rauch, who succeeded Al Davis as head coach of the Raiders and led the team to Super Bowl II after the 1967 season, has died at age 80.
Rauch was an offensive assistant under Davis, and took over as head coach in 1966. He was succeeded by linebackers coach John Madden in 1969.
The Raiders announced the death in a statement:
Our hearts go out to his family who we knew well. John Rauch gave us several great years as an assistant and head coach for The Oakland Raiders and he took us to our first Super Bowl in 1967. They were memorable years for the Raiders and they will never be forgotten and they should not be forgotten.
It was the second recent death of a highly regarded Raiders coach.
Longtime defensive line coach Earl Leggett died in May, the team announced:
He was a trusted, valued contributor to the greatness of the Raiders, having served on two Super Bowl Championship teams. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Bobbie, his children and family.
