CHAZ SCHILENS
- WIDE RECEIVER
- No: 82
- Height: 6’4
- Weight: 225
- Birth date: 11/07/1985
- College: San Diego State
- Acquired: Selected in the 7th round (226 overall) of the 2008 NFL Entry Draft
Chaz Schilens is one of the many receiving prospects Oakland will have in camp all summer fighting to round out a unit that may have a few spots up for grab.
Javon Walker, Ronald Curry and Drew Carter are undoubtedly the top three pass catchers on the team. But after that, there are no clear-cut favorites to make the final roster. Schilens size, speed and exceptional athleticism intrigue the staff, but his route running needs a lot of work. He is not a polished pass catcher, and with his attributes, many will liken him to John Madsen, another big target that Oakland has attempted to put at flanker but has not made significant impact on a receiver starved club.
If Schilens translates his physical attributes into football talent, Oakland may have a nice find. They may be able to groom him in the practice squad if they feel he is not ready to contribute in his rookie year, but since there is a lot of competition, some good showings in the pre-season could lead to a job on the final 53-man roster.
“He really impressed us in some workouts that he had after the season,” Raiders coach Lane Kiffin stated in May. “His film wasn’t as good necessarily, but we really felt he improved enough to take a chance on him.”
